THE SHORT VERSION

SEO trends come and go, but these five fundamentals have outlasted every algorithm update we've tracked.

Search algorithms change constantly, but the businesses that consistently rank well tend to get the same handful of fundamentals right, year after year. Here are the five we always start with.

1. Technical health before content strategy

No amount of great content overcomes a site that's slow, broken on mobile, or blocking search engines from indexing key pages. We audit technical health first, every time — it's the foundation everything else sits on.

2. Match content to actual search intent

Ranking for a keyword nobody with buying intent is searching for doesn't grow your business. We map content to what people are actually trying to accomplish when they search — informational, comparison, or ready-to-buy — and write for that specific intent. A page built for someone comparing options needs a different structure, and often a different call to action, than one built for someone who's already decided and just needs a reason to pick you.

3. Internal linking is still underused

A clear internal linking structure helps search engines understand which pages matter most on your site, and it helps visitors find related content instead of bouncing. Most sites we audit have almost no intentional internal linking strategy at all — new pages get published in isolation, with no links pointing to them from established, high-authority pages that could pass along relevance.

4. Page experience compounds

Fast load times, stable layouts, and easy navigation don't just help rankings directly — they reduce bounce rate, which is itself a signal that your page satisfied the search. Good UX and good SEO are far more connected than most people assume.

5. Freshness signals matter for competitive terms

For topics where the answer changes over time, regularly updated content tends to outperform stale pages, even ones with more backlinks. Revisiting and improving existing content is often higher-leverage than publishing something brand new, and it's usually cheaper too — you're improving an asset that already has some authority instead of starting from zero.

None of these fundamentals are flashy, and none of them will show results overnight. But they're also the five things that have never stopped working, regardless of which algorithm update just shipped.

Where to start if you can only do one

If we had to prioritize, technical health comes first, every time — content and links built on a slow or unindexable site are wasted effort. After that, matching content to search intent gives the fastest visible return, since it's often a rewrite of what you already have rather than a from-scratch project. Internal linking, page experience, and freshness are the compounding layer: less urgent in week one, but the difference between rankings that hold steady and rankings that quietly slide as competitors catch up.
